The Automotive is a
vocational skill subject introduced by the Central
Board of Secondary Education to develop technical knowledge and
employability skills in the automobile service sector. The course follows a
structured sequence of theoretical and practical units designed for the job
role of Automotive Service Technician, enabling students to
understand modern vehicle systems and workshop practices.
History of the Course:
Automotive education at the school level was strengthened after the
introduction of skill-based education under the National Skills Qualification
Framework (NSQF) in India. With the rapid growth of the automobile industry,
CBSE integrated Automotive as a vocational subject in collaboration with
industry bodies such as the Automotive Skills
Development Council. Over the years, the subject has expanded to many
schools across different states, promoting industry-oriented learning and
practical training at the senior secondary level.
The curriculum includes identification of
automotive components, safe use of tools and equipment, basic vehicle
maintenance, automotive electronics, workplace safety, green skills, and
customer service. Students also learn communication skills, first aid, and
entrepreneurship basics through hands-on activities.
